Is campo dei miracoli worth visiting?
Pisa is a beautiful small city in Italy that is only an hour’s drive from Florence.
Pisa is in the centre of Tuscany and has world-famous structures that are a must-see when in the city.
Campo dei Miracoli, known as Piazza dei Miracoli or the Square of Miracles is the main highlight of Pisa. The square became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is found along the northwest side of Pisa.
With Campo dei Miracoli having some historic buildings, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it’s well worth visiting the square. The three buildings at the square represent the main stages of life from birth to life and death.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the city’s main attraction! There are thousands of people visiting the city each year to take a photo of themselves holding up the tower.
The Leaning Tower is a bell tower and is technically part of the cathedral. The Leaning Tower is now over 800 years old and is slowly starting to straighten back up. We say slowly because from 2001 to 2022, the tower straightened out by 1.6 inches.
Duomo Santa Maria Assunta
The Cathedral of Santa Maria is a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral that was built in 1118. The cathedral was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is also the oldest structure in Campo dei Miracoli.
Battistero di San Giovanni
The Baptistery of St. John is a Roman Catholic which presents birth. The baptistery took over 200 years to build to replace an older baptistery. The Baptistery of St. John opened in 1363 and has a double dome which gives the baptistery surprising acoustic sounds.
Camposanto
The Pisa cemetery of course represents death. The cemetery opened in 1464 and was contracted by Giovanni.
The cemetery has over 40 arches and two doorways. It’s believed the people’s bodies who were buried here would decay within 24 hours. People who were part of important families, rectors, and professors of the University of Pisa were buried here.
